Breakups are rough, especially in WWE. It’s not just the added pressure of splitting up with your significant other in front of a national audience, either. WWE Superstars like to do things at full speed and top volume, so it’s no surprise that when a WWE couple takes a detour into Splitsville, they do so with gusto. So, from Daniel Bryan’s recent split with AJ all the way back to “Macho Man” and Miss Elizabeth, we present to you a dozen of the most gut-wrenching breakups in WWE history.

In many ways, the most recent break-up is also the cruelest. For months, Daniel Bryan had been involved in an oddly manipulative relationship with AJ during his World Heavyweight Championship reign, commanding her like a subordinate and using her as something of a human shield during his matches with opponents like Big Show and Mark Henry. His wits failed him, however, when he faced Sheamus for the championship at WrestleMania XXVIII and Bryan beckoned his beloved to the apron for their customary good luck kiss after the bell had rung. Sufficiently distracted, he was felled by a Brogue Kick and relieved of his mantle by The Celtic Warrior in a record 18 seconds. The following Friday, on SmackDown, the former champion laid the blame at AJ’s feet, breaking her heart before the entire WWE Universe and turning his back on the “Geek Goddess,” forcing her to retreat to the locker room in a mess of tears.
